ERO Report
Our second ERO Review was conducted during the first week of March, 2009. We were delighted with the Report. The school remains on ERO's normal three-year cycle of reviews because it is still too new (5 years old at the time of the review) to have built up the "history of successful reviews" required before being considered for 4-5 year review periods.
The research programme with Literacy in Year 1 (New Entrant) classes had been operating for only 17 days of its two-year programme at the time of the ERO Visit so the reviewers were not able to measure anything of its success. These children are using the "Building Blocks to Literacy" programme . Now, after almost two years using this approach, we can see outstanding achievement, particularly in written language. Other schools in New Zealand and Australia are now sending their teachers to observe the programme in action as the success of our children is achieving international celebration.
ERO also encouraged us to further develop our Self Review strategies. Now that the school has been open for six years, we finally have several children who have been enrolled at Oteha Valley School for more than three years. Self Reviews can therefore become more detailed as school procedures have been embedded long enough to be scrutinised and the collection of achievement data 'over time' for Oteha Valley's learning programmes can give more meaningful information and reports.
