Welcome to French! Term 3

Bonjour - et bienvenue aux classes de français à l'école d'Oteha Valley!

Years 5 & 6

In French this term, we will be learning how to:
  • talk about where we live and our nationalities
  • say the French alphabet and spell our names
  • say the names of animals (and the sounds they make!) - Year 5
  • name different kinds of  food and say what we like to eat - Year 6
  • follow more complex classroom instructions.
We will be using a range of language-learning resources & activities:
  • flashcards and repetition
  • actions and mime
  • role-play and dialogues
  • French books, CDs and DVDs
  • language-learning activities on the Internet
  • songs and raps such as "L'alphabet français" and "La grande bouffe"
  • games such as "Jacques a dit", LOTO and "Qui c'est?"
We will be working on all four skill areas (speaking, listening, writing, reading) and we will also be looking at France and French-speaking countries, their people and their way of life.

Towards the end of the term, we will be using IT to look at interactive story-telling in French.

Le club de français

We meet on Monday lunch-times for Years 1 and 2 and on Wednesday lunch-times for Years 3 and 4.
In French this term, we will be learning how to:
  • say the French alphabet
  • name different kinds of food
  • count to 20
  • follow more complex classroom instructions
We will be singing songs and playing games in French, such as “L'alphabet français", "Mimi la mygale", “Jacques a dit“, LOTO and number-marching.

We will also be finding out about the French way of life and using IT to look at interactive story-telling.

Just before the holidays, we will be having a "cinéma français" session and making up some traditional French "tartines" to eat - the children’s favourite lesson of all!

The emphasis will be on speaking French whilst having fun!

Le club des blogs français

This term, children in Year 5 & 6 who would like to take their French further, especially in the written form, will have the opportunity to join the new French Blog club. This will operate on either Thursday or Friday lunchtimes (depending on children’s other commitments) and the focus this term will be the topic of "school". Children will show their work and exchange news with other French-language learners, both in New Zealand and overseas (and ultimately with French native speakers), in a secure blog environment.

Ici on parle français - et on s'amuse bien!
